VC Film Festival

Filipinx Actors Barkada Uba Carpet VC Film Festival

I recently attended a screening on day 9 of the VC Film Festival a few weeks back. In case you don’t know what that the VC Film Festival (formerly the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival) is here’s a snippet from their official website.

“Since 1983, the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival has presented over 5,000 films, videos, and digital mediaworks by Asian & Pacific Islander artists, and features seminars, panels, in-person guest appearances, and filmmaker awards. The Film Festival continues to be the largest festival of its kind in Southern California and is the premier showcase for the best and brightest of Asian Pacific cinema.”

The block I attended was the Kuwentuhan block. Theme of the block was Filipino rooted stories. I was there to support one of the members of the Filipinx Actors Barkada Zedrick Restauro in his lead role of one of the shorts “Apartment 605”. Its kind of funny because since I’m still so new to the group I really haven’t met a lot of the members yet and they all have crazy credentials but they’ve been so good to me and I feel they've really nurtured a community that really supports each other.

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of all the shorts they screened. I don’t know what my expectations were heading into it but I found myself being profoundly struck and entertained by all of the shorts shown. The night started off with “VS” a film which the Basco family had many ties in creating.

The highlight of the night to me was this film called “Lola” by Grace Hanna. It deals with a young woman and her struggles with her grandmother’s (Lola) increasing dementia. It was something I had to deal with as my own Lola got older and would struggle to remember who I was. The way she creatively portrayed that struggle had me locked in and when it got to the credits I was speechless. Such a moving piece of work that I encourage everyone to see. I can’t wait to see more from Grace.

So proud of all the filmmakers and their cast and crew. Here’s a few highlights from the night
